The Red Lion (Weymouth)

The Red Lion is one of Weymouth’s finest and most famous pubs. It is recognised for being the pub nearest to the Weymouth R.N.L.I. and is known as the lifeboat man’s pub. On the walls are great pictures and artifacts from the history of the lifeboat and its crews over the years in Weymouth. The Red Lion is also famous for being the Old Devenish Brewery ‘Tap’. The Devenish Brewery (now closed) is opposite the Red Lion in Hope Square. The history and heritage of being an ale house is reflected in the pub too with one wall made from old barrels originally from the brewery. On the back bar are over 60 rums to celebrate the pubs naval and seafaring connections and of course the food menu reflects the abundance of seafood available here in Weymouth. The Red Lion has always been famous for its ales and still is today, but now the pub has developed a good name for its home cooked food and amazing collection of rums and whiskies on its splendid back bar shelves. The Pub has its own ‘bible’ of whiskies and rums for enthusiasts to look through.

After scattering my sisters ashes, we as a family went to the Red Lion for a drink. , to raise a glass in memory of my sister. When we arrive we were greeted by a member of staff, only to be told we weren't allowed more than 8 people in the pub! Now after explaining our grief and what we have just done, the person behind the bar didn't seem that bothered. She said you can only have the one drink and we will have to leave. They made us feel very unwelcome and tried to force us out by putting a reserved tag on the table where we were sat. All the staff were unfriendly and we as a family will never go back there. Disgusting.

Terrible!!!!

Absolutely disgusting. We turned up to sit outside. Lots of tables available. We were three separate families wanting to sit at three separate tables. Was told because we turned up altogether we were not allowed in as we are more than 8 people. Had each family turned up 10 minutes in between, that would of been fine. Makes absolutely no sense, don't bother going here as whoever made up this rule clearly needs to re-think this ridiculous, unthought out rule 😡😡😡

This pub is appalling and I would advise not to go there. they are cruel and mean to there customers and will turn you away if you have no ID or a child under 13. They will take your drinks of you. They made my little brother cry and yanked my drink out of my hand their employees have no respect. Again I will repeat don’t go there because it is horrible.

As group we have Been going there for a few years now every Friday night and spending a lot of money on drink because it’s a nice location. The staff have always been good with us but previous to lockdown 2 we went there for a final drink and it was tableservice the final round was not paid. The following day the landlord contacted us and let us know about the non-payment we offered to pay the next day but he said whenever it’s convenient for us. We have just been there again after lockdown and was charged an extra £9 for late payment! I actually thought this was a joke until later then one of the group showed me the bill we have no channels the landlord about this and he came back saying it was a twat tax. Suffice to say we will not drink there again!
