The Greyhound on the Test

This charming 600 year old former pub located by the River Test has bags of character and a popular restaurant serving great food. In addition, there are luxury bedrooms, which are generally spacious, beautifully styled and come with a host of extras. The simple, seasonal menu currently includes pub classics like the open steak sandwich, and more adventurous options, including an ox tail and oyster pudding.

My brother and I ate here on Friday lunchtime. What's not to entice you in when you see a lunch specials board outside showcasing dishes like Monkfish, Gurnard and Mussel Paella, whole Plaice or Iberico Pork (all at £16.50)? The welcome is warm, the restaurant is air-conditioned and the room is inviting. Bruce, the chef/owner, popped out of the kitchen and recommended the duck bhaji as a starter - and I'm glad he did. Not only was the bhaji bursting with flavour but the accompanying sauce was a revelation. For someone who has been known to lean towards gluttony, I was delighted that the portions are ample! My main was the panko Iberico pork which came on a bed of seasonal veg and a more-ish mushroom sauce. As much as I enjoyed every bite, I did look over at my brother's chicken and chorizo paella with some regret - as it looked wonderful. No space for dessert, but I did make room for another chilled glass of moderately-priced Chenin Blanc. The service was attentive, professional and friendly, without crossing over into that over-familiar and cloying tendency that some staff think is endearing. Bruce came over for a lengthy chat and what is evident is the passion and commitment he has for the food he prepares and puts in front of you. It truly feels like a labour of love. Which begs the question: where are all the diners? I suspect that the perception that this is fine-dining suggests you need to mortgage the property to eat here. A slap-up meal from the a la carte menu may well add up, but we all acknowledge that a good meal out is seldom cheap and hospitality is facing the brunt of crippling costs from all directions. And yet, we enjoyed a top-notch main course in a refined atmosphere, with food created by an acclaimed chef, that cost less than a burger in my local. I could have kept this review shorter by saying that I would happily eat here every day of the week. If only ....

The best restaurant in Godalming and the surrounding area, a little gem that we are lucky to have! Thank you for a wonderful Sunday lunch- the weather was so hot so we had your seafood sharing platter for 2 and it was absolutely delicious.
