Back in the day Balham was Peter Sellers' Gateway to the South, a national joke coined by a comedy legend. Today the good folks of Balham have the last laugh as South London’s chuckle central is a mecca for laughter -lovers, hipsters and — hallelujah, mama! — Connoisseurs of the finest BBQ and rare beers, Bourbons and sipping whiskies to be found this side of the Atlantic divide. Loud and proud on Balham's main drag, Bodean's corner site bar and BBQ is a local landmark on the highway to the stars. Whether you wish to worship the ultimate Kansas City BBQ or sit at the elegant U-bar sampling a selection of prime Stateside ales and rare liquors, you know you've come home to good times.

I booked Bodean's Balham for my daughters birthday dinner surprise. There were 30 of us! This didn't phase the Bodean team. They were friendly and got in the mix with us. The food arrived it was hot and fresh and the service was 2nd to none. They made my daughter's birthday very memorable, and everyone had a good time. I would definately recommend and go back.

We had a very pleasant reception and was asked whether we wanted to sit inside or outside. It was a warm afternoon/evening so we asked to be sat outside. The football was on (which was an added bonus) but the volume of the music and the TV were competing against each other and you couldn't understand either (it was just a dirge of background noise and my wife and I were unable to hear each other). We were left without drinks for quite a while but was brought free snacks. When the waiter (who was very friendly) did take our order he found it very difficult to understand what we wanted to eat and drink. The starters of chicken thighs were excellent and the sauces were lovely. The restaurant must want high/fast turnover because as soon as the starters were finished out came the main course which was very disappointing. My wife had the hot dog - the sausage tasted like it had been dropped in detergent and the texture could only be described as 'mushy' which was not nice. I had the burnt ends which were very fatty (you expect a bit but not that much!) and quite bland. Our plates were whipped away very quickly. Overall I was disappointed with the food and expected much better. I love American BBQ food but I will be finding somewhere else to go. I would suggest you have either music or TV on (not both), give people time between courses and taste a little of your own food - it needs refining. The waiting staff were very friendly and nice.
