The Sloop Inn

The Sloop Inn was built in 1833 and was extended in 1860, the first half being Georgian and the second half being Victorian style. A Sloop is a type of boat and they used Sloops to carry bricks from Lewes to Balcombe down the canal, which, though not in use any more, you can still find a few steps from our front door. The bricks were imported from Holland, loaded onto Sloops at Newhaven, sailed to somewhere around Barcombe and from that point they were pulled by horses. Over 10 million bricks were used to build the Balcombe viaduct which you can find about 4 miles away from the pub. Whilst doing renovation works back in 2014 we found evidence of what could have been a stable block at the rear of the building. It’s believed that The Sloop could have been a point where horses were changed over.

The pub is situated between Scaynes Hill and Horsted Keynes, deep in the valley and near to The Bluebell Railway. To this day we serve homemade food using locally sourced produce and we pride ourselves on the quality of our food and service that we offer.

We are now Bill's converts and seek out a branch wherever we stay. Bill's in Bath did not disappoint with a great choice of breakfasts in a nice environment. Online booking was very straightforward.
