The Sloop Inn

The Sloop Inn was built in 1833 and was extended in 1860, the first half being Georgian and the second half being Victorian style. A Sloop is a type of boat and they used Sloops to carry bricks from Lewes to Balcombe down the canal, which, though not in use any more, you can still find a few steps from our front door. The bricks were imported from Holland, loaded onto Sloops at Newhaven, sailed to somewhere around Barcombe and from that point they were pulled by horses. Over 10 million bricks were used to build the Balcombe viaduct which you can find about 4 miles away from the pub. Whilst doing renovation works back in 2014 we found evidence of what could have been a stable block at the rear of the building. It’s believed that The Sloop could have been a point where horses were changed over.

The pub is situated between Scaynes Hill and Horsted Keynes, deep in the valley and near to The Bluebell Railway. To this day we serve homemade food using locally sourced produce and we pride ourselves on the quality of our food and service that we offer.

Although we live fairly local to this pub/restaurant, we only started dining at the sloop over the last 3months. The staff are very welcoming and the food is good value . We highly recommend the sloop to friends and family and are aware that our daughter and son have recently dined there and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Great atmosphere, fantastic location, good food. The weekend we visited at the end of May the pub were trialling a new grill menu for the summer that consisted of small plates of yummy treats. Despite the appetising nature of the menu, which did include a burger, our group would have been happier with a more conventional bbq grill or pub lunch menu.
