My second time at Anakuma, wife's first. Did not disappoint at all. Atmosphere is lively, but not noisy so very comfortable. Staff are lovely and the food and drink is excellent. Top all that with really good prices for a central Brighton restaurant and it is a winner for me! Will be back, and highly recommend. TIP: try the corn ribs - they are to die for. Have tried to replicate myself, but not quite there!!

Great service; muddled restaurant

Went here after being unable to get a table at its excellent sister restaurant, Halisco, which myself and my gf adore. Anakuma by contrast left us a bit underwhelmed. It’s all a bit muddled - Japanese/Mexican fusion (Halisco is all out Mexican), but the Japanese element doesn’t appear to go any further than adding a bit of wasabi or ponzu to certain dishes. The decision to scrap the bao buns section of the menu for just a selection of Asian(ish) tacos is jarring; if you’re going to focus tacos here too then why not make the restaurant a Halisco overflow and serve the same menu? Food was so-so; tacos lacked punch; tortilla chips were stale; portioning across the menu was inconsistent. Just feels like a restaurant without much to define it beyond being an offshoot of Halisco. Service was superb from the team, who were under pressure a lot of the time. Wouldn’t not recommend it, but also difficult to say I’d want to return in a hurry. Especially with Halisco so close by.

Lovely Evening

Everything about Anakuma was brilliant. It was only slightly let down by one of our dishes not being up to the standard of the rest of the meal and overall atmosphere. The staff were great, a waitress even helped direct us to some local bars and all but one dish were amazing. Highlight for me personally was the incredible tenderstam broccoli in satay and anchovies - what the hell was that, it was amazing. Our duck taco was dry however and we’re not sure if that was intended or an element was left out. Never mind though, we loved it here

great food and cocktails
