The Shepherd and Dog
OUR HISTORY
The Shepherd and Dog started as just a beerhouse in 1848, owned by William Smith, and was later built up to be an inn. The property was originally built slightly further along High Street, which you can see in the photograph slider below, but in 1929 it was rebuilt at the corner of High Street and Moor Road, where the original inn's stables had been.
By the 1960s The Shepherd and Dog was a Truman's pub and tied house, meaning they were required to buy at least some of the beer they sold from Truman's Brewery, one of the world's largest breweries in the late 19th century. However, the Truman's Brewery did not see as much success in the 20th century, and were forced to sell the property, so The Shepherd and Dog became a free house owned by John Carroll in 1986.
The first photo in the slider below shows The Shepherd and Dog in 1900, when it was still based further along the High Street. The second photo is an aerial view of the pub in 1961, after it had been rebuilt upon the previous building's stables. The third photo, from 1990, shows pub owners Paul Barnes and Jane Graham receiving a nomination for "Best pub of the Constituency". Finally, the last photo shows The Shepherd and Pub as it appears now.
