Delighted to have discovered this restaurant. We were visiting the town for a poetry festival and it was as if our experience at the restaurant was a continuation of our poetry experience. It's a small menu - always a sign that the food is freshly cooked. The dishes are imaginative deconstructions and reconstructions of the cuisine of that part of the world - put together with intelligence and a love of cooking, variations that were un-showy and made perfect sense in their combinations of flavours and textures. The atmosphere was calm and unhurried and the staff were welcoming and knowledgeable about the dishes. We made sure we went back before we left the area; on the second visit we were guided expertly through the tasting menu. We will certainly return to the East India Cafe. As the Bengali poet Tagore said: "The fish in the water is silent, the animal on the earth is noisy, the bird in the air is singing, But Man has in him the silence of the sea, the noise of the earth and the music of the air." We had all these elements on our table in celestial harmony.

Excellent meal at EIC. Food was fabulous, with extras offered too. Service also excellent. Lovely surprise at the end of the meal, birthday cupcake and complimentary Prosecco. We will definitely be back.

Last Sunday evening, I had the best Indian meal I have ever had. The welcome and service were warm yet professional. We opted for the tasting menu, which was an excellent choice. All eight courses were superb. Each course was unique. The chef clearly knows his craft. The house drink recipes and the perfectly paired beverages were also excellent. We will definitely be back.
