The Ragged Cot
Having stood proudly since the 17th Century, the coaching house has an intriguing past filled with highwaymen and pilferage. Since been taken under new ownership in August 2020, The Ragged Cot has a modern, comfortable style – with dogs and wellies welcome! The shabby chic interior and deeply cosy bedrooms are the epitome of countryside cool.
Backing on to 600 acres of National Trust land, The Ragged Cot is a stone’s throw from the ancient market town of Minchinhampton and within easy reach of Tetbury and Cirencester. From the world-famous Gatcombe Festival of British Eventing to the award-winning local farmers’ markets, it is perfectly placed for access to the most popular Cotswold events and activities. This also makes The Ragged Cot the ideal venue for private hire and corporate stays.
At The Ragged Cot, we take great pride and care when creating our menu – following our core philosophy of “cooked with care and served with pride”. We create each dish and their components with fresh produce at its heart. We don’t use frozen vegetables; we only use fish which is either fresh from market or frozen at sea and our meats come from cattle and other livestock which have grazed green pastures and our poultry have been allowed to run free. In doing so, we support many local and UK producers, farmers and suppliers. We use biodegradable cleaning chemicals, we sort and recycle around 80% of our waste and our used oil is collected, cleaned and converted into biofuel. We don’t work with just anyone, we look for the highest accreditations, full traceability and sustainability so that we don’t harm our precious environment.
PROVENANCE
Supporting UK Fishermen & Markets
Working with our supplier Kingfisher Brixham we have links to UK fishing ports so that we can support UK fishing. In doing so, it enables us to source from the best local fishermen. We have an amazing supply of the freshest fish available, from sea bass, Dover sole and skate through to grey mullet and cod. We source many other sustainable varieties when in season. During the summer we also buy lots of local lobsters, crabs and shellfish.
We work with day boat suppliers in ports all around the UK, such as codling fillets from Scarborough and lemon sole from Whitby. From the south coast we also source day boat prime fish including, red mullet, plaice, turbot and brill.
Our supplier Kingfisher, are first-hand buyers at most of the UK coastal fish auctions, enabling us to ensure full traceability from the vessel through to delivery into our kitchen, to your table. Most of our depots are conveniently situated near to the local auction, such as, North Shields, Fleetwood and Brixham.
Farmed Fish
Farmed fish may feature within our menu due to its consistent quality, availability and price. To enable us to guarantee responsible sourcing, we import through our suppliers from source, such as bass and bream from Turkey, prawns from India and salmon from Scotland and Norway.
Shellfish
We only work with small, specialist operators for live shellfish. In summer months we buy lobsters and crabs from local fishermen and during the winter we import through our suppliers directly from North America. Their coastal depots have live shellfish holding tanks enabling us to guarantee ultimate freshness.
Fresh Meat
All our fresh meat comes from our butcher Jesse Smith of Cirencester (www.jessesmith.co.uk). A family owned business with six generations of butchers in the same family, who pride themselves on having a reputation built on their uncompromising commitment to provenance and sourcing the finest quality produce.
Fresh Bread
Our bread is supplied by Hall’s Quality Bakers, a well established 4th generation family run business (www.hallsqualitybakers.co.uk). Originally established in 1902 to deliver fresh quality baked breads to the homes in Minchinhampton and neighbouring villages.
Fresh Fruit & Vegetables
Our fresh fruit and vegetable supplier, Worcester Produce are situated in the Vale of Evesham their farm and orchards provide us with a unique and extensive range of fruit & vegetables. Grown to Red Tractor and LEAF Marque accreditation standards their produce and therefore or a la carte menu provides confidence to our customers in food quality and safety whilst ensuring protection to the environment.
Fresh Eggs
Our eggs are delivered fresh three or four times a week from Chadwick Farm, Chadwick Lane, Knowle, Solihull. With an RSPCA assured laying scheme certificate you know our eggs come from chickens which have been cared for and live happier lives, having not been intensely farmed.

We won't be back for afternoon tea. I had read your website and the photograph was the big seller - it looked like a beautiful and rather decadent afternoon tea. The reality was so disappointing after that photo and the accompanying description. Sandwiches don't INCLUDE egg & prawn, they are ONLY egg and prawn. The Marie Rose sauce was watery, and the sandwiches soggy. I failed to find chives in the egg sandwiches, plenty of pepper though, cough cough. The scones (plural) pictured are twice the size of the scone (singular) that arrived, the vegetable frittata was reheated and rubbery and tasted of ???. The sausage rolls (another plural description) was a two bite single, as were the two cakes provided - neither of which looked anything like the picture nor matched the description. All served on a rickety tiered tray, on plates that were too big and made the meagure tea look even more meagure. The quality of the food was just not that great - we left some, and although the waitress offered to box it for us we really didn't want to take it with us. Sorry - you are a great venue for other food, but this was not a great experience.

Good venue, attentive staff, food was ok, slightly overcooked for my liking and on the expensive side, especially the side dishes.
